Thanks for the input everyone, I’ve already applied Horizontal Scrolling for mobile-users to every comic strip in the site. You might have to zoom-in for the double or larger comic strips, but they’re still readable in my experience. Horizontal Scrolling also shouldn’t conflict with already webtoon’d comic strips like with Episode 1. I might convert more strips too to webtoon in the future if I have the time!

While you’re waiting for me to finish the Valentine’s Day 2020 comic, I’ve been doing some testing with possible mobile comic formats. Help out by testing them out with your phone/tablet, then tell me your opinions and suggestions in the comments or polls below!
Links to those pages have been removed! Thanks to everyone who participated!
In order of how easy they are to implement:
Horizontal Scrolling
Comics can now scroll horizontally. Work involved depends if I upload bigger comic sizes to compensate for the zoomed-in comic. Looks pretty nice in either orientations, I can actually implement this right now if you guys don’t care about the image lower quality!
Rotate
The comics, just rotated 90 degrees. I still have to upload a separate file for each comic with this method, but at least all I have to do is rotate and export them. Oh, and just before someone suggests it, I did try rotating the whole comic navigation + comic with CSS, but too bad the rest of the page’s elements don’t adjust automatically. If that worked, this would be a way easier fix than Horizontal Scrolling.
I’m not too keen on this though since you have to set your phone to portrait mode, it’s hard to switch into a different format if I change my mind later, aaand my inner web designer is telling me this is stupid.
Manga/Rectangle page
Upload new versions of the comic strip in a manga-like rectangle format. Gonna take a lot of work to convert the strips into this. The benefit with this is I might be able to use this in physical prints, though the page you can see is still a bit shorter than an actual (Shonen Jump) manga page. Around 20% shorter to be exact! I was thinking of changing Cat Nine’s format to something like this, but I’ll think about it more seriously after the current episode is over.
Related to this is the square format like with the Mega Myan VS Bakunawa comic. Fits in most places and super easy to share in sites like Instagram, but it’s a lot more limiting than it looks. I’m sure you’ve seen some comics that would be a lot better if they cut one or more panels for their joke… and if not, just check out r/comedynecromancy for some examples. You could argue that they just need to level up their humor, but some comicsĀ need fewer panels, and that’s often not possible with a square format. Finally, I want to reserve this format for bonus comics, for now. Why am I using it then? Well, it just looks so nice in the home/blog pages ain’t it?
Webtoon
Some of you should be familiar with this mobile-optimized, super-long, vertical comic format. Downside is, like the manga page format, this will take some time to convert and upload. The benefits of this is I can upload this to websites LINE Webtoon, Tapas, and MangaDex. I suppose it does look great on mobile, though I’m not a huge fan of this since you can’t really be creative with the panels… though I’ll admit, I haven’t played with creative panels recently, so this might be a moot point. Lastly, you can drop some panels if needed, unlike the square format. A neutral point is I can just rotate the long horizontal panels I’ve used in Cat Nine. Not ideal, but it will do!
I was supposed to put up an Opinion Stage poll here, but they apparently have a 250/month view limit now with the Free version. They’ve become extremely greedy these past years, geez. Gonna use Straw Poll from now on!
Poll closed and removed!
I just told myself I wouldn’t be fiddling around with the website again, but ehh, I suddenly found myself having another go at trying to make the website more mobile-friendly again.
So far, all I’ve done is:
- Remove the left-sidebar. The left-sidebar disappears when the width is down to a certain size. This should work on most mobile screen sizes (in both orientations), but also with desktop browsers, unfortunately. If I did this correctly, the left-sidebar shouldn’t disappear when you resize desktop browsers, but I don’t have the time yet so this will do for now! Later, I’m planning to put up another sidebar for mobile-users just below the bottom comic navigation that displays my social media, ko-fi, and Patreon.
- Disable all of the widgets on mobile for the left sidebar.Ā The left sidebar is just hidden through CSS actually, so I still need to disable some of the widgets before they load so mobile-users don’t load them, specifically the advertisements. I disabled all of them though just in case, and they’re only disabled for mobile. This should speed things up a bit for mobile-users!
- Adjust the width to 100% for the right sidebar. Well, the remaining sidebar, which contains most of the content. If I left it alone, there’d be a huge space left by the removed left-sidebar. Reading the blog/
comments, and looking at the artwork from the homepage looks a lot nicer now! Er, okay, the comments look too small to read without zooming-in. I don’t recall if they were that small before I changed stuff, so, sorry if it did become smaller! - From now on, artwork will fit 90-95% of the screen’s height. I’ve applied it to all of the artwork displayed currently displayed in the homepage. Looks like I need to decide on a minimum width for them so they’ll fit it perfectly for mobile…
- Added some slight space between the bottom comic navigation and the responsive ad, to lessen misclicks.
And sorry, but you still have to zoom-in and/or read in landscape orientation for most of the comics since I have to convert them to the vertical format first, which takes a lot of time, plus not all pages will fit the format correctly.
I was thinking if I should permanently change to a square/vertical/manga page format to make things easier for myself. I still like the horizontal strip format a lot though, but I’ll think about this more seriously after the current Episode is over. What do you guys think?

New Discord Emojis

IndiSkye and MCWildcat boosted the Cat Nine Discord server, so we got 100+ more emoji slots to use, so thanks you two! Now we have a lot more emojis to abuse. I hope I won’t regret adding some of these, especially those two with Myan and Tammy licking!
Comicad Ads
Remember Project Wonderful (RIP)? A couple of guys started a replacement called Comicad.net, and I’m already using it to publish and advertise as some of you have already seen. Perhaps if it performs better than Google Adsense, I’ll even replace all of them with these.
So if you guys got a website, comic, or artwork to advertise, why not start here? For now, I’ve got two ad units:
- Leaderboard (728×90): This leaderboard ad shows at the top of most pages, and more importantly, near comic pages, so it’s prime real estate! Has a minimum of $0.15 though. I replaced an Adsense responsive ad for this, but it’s starting to look like it’s worth it.
- Skyscraper (160×600): Found on the bottom left sidebar. Visible while scrolling down the homepage, most posts/pages, and the comments section. No minimum bid. And for now, I’ve also set it so it will follow people around when they scroll down for maximum visibility! I hope that doesn’t annoy people too much though… but hey, most of you are reading for free you know!
- NEW! Square (300×250):Ā Replaced another responsive Google ad, this time in the left sidebar. Added 2/9/2020. Looks like there’s a max of 3 ads per website with Comicads.
Finally, depending on your Patreon tier, these three ads will be disabled similarly with Adsense ads if you’re logged-in.
Episode 1 mobile comic pages up!
All of Episode 1 now has mobile/vertical comic pages! Feel free to read them on mobile… or not! If you have time though, please do read them to check if I missed anything or made a mistake!
Sorry if they’re sloppily made, cause they are! Looking at my older stuff fills me with disgust and I just want to hide under the covers! You’re welcome!
sobs
Haha! Finally figured out how to make mobile/vertical versions of the Cat Nine comic pages. No need for Tapas anymore! Only the first page is up for now though. It will only work if you’re on mobile and if a mobile-sized comic is available, otherwise the normal horizontal page will load instead.
It will take me some time to make them and they’re low-priority compared to actually making comic pages. I’ll make these vertical strips if I have free time, but thankfully I can use the 146 pages I’ve already made for Tapas.
Also expect that not all pages are gonna look great in mobile, especially now that I’m using Clip Studio since it’s a lot easier to move/resize things in Flash. You guys on mobile can just load the desktop version, or I can just not make a vertical page.
Now, some gratitude is in order!
- Thank you The fourth bird and your answer.
- Thank you tooĀ Pedro Lobito and your answer.
- Frumph, for his suggestion that I didn’t think I’d use. Plus he made Comic Easel which I’m using for Cat Nine!
- And last but not the least, everyone who tested the first page.
I’m gonna remove the nomAd tier soon since the month is practically over, so feel free to adjust your pledge as you wish!
- Old and current nomAds will be in the Hall of Fame section in the kofi/patrons page to thank you even though the tier is removed.
- I’ll start designing the mentions below the comic pages.
- Two art streams this month. One for those who keep or decrease their pledge (to RAWR/$5+), and another for those who increase it to at least KitTen ($10)!
Hello everyone! With new patrons appearing, me being confused about which posts to assign access to (specifically HD versions) and starting to make nude versions regularly, I feel like now’s a good time to change update my Patreon page again. I’ll be implementing these changes by January 2019. Feel free to read the changes below, and make comments here or anywhere else.
tl;dr:
- Except for HD, nude versions, and the downloadable RARchives, I’ve never really liked locking my artwork behind a paywall. So all artwork I’ll make (aside from the three previously mentioned) will only be timed exclusives. The normal quality versions of the artwork will eventually be available to everyone, though I’ll be spacing them at least 24 hours.
- If something can be accessed early/can see the WIP, you can usually see their HD versions too. I didn’t want to make separate posts for HD and early access.
- I’ve already changed the Goals. Not much of a change, but I’ll be making more bonus art and fan art as more people become patrons.
- Moved some of the benefits around since I feel you’re getting a lot of value with it already plus you can still see nude versions of sketches.
- nomAd tier removed since I feel it doesn’t really do much for me and you guys. Logged-in RAWRs will remove all ads instead and I’ve replaced it with a new $10 tier. The new tier will allow you to suggest names and designs for new characters, have more priority/weight for bonus art suggestions and Episode Polls, and finally, an exclusive fully colored bonus art suggestion just for this tier. Oh, and I suppose your name will look nicer in the mentions.
- Only RAWRs and above can suggest stuff for bonus art and fan art now. And you can suggest any of them to be pinups š. I’ll make nude versions of them later, if applicable. I’ll also message all patrons with access to nude versions with a direct link to the artwork.
- Most bonus art/fan art will be sketches, but at least 1 from both categories will be inked+colored each month
Goals
Cat Nine bonus art (Cat Nine characters only)
- Monthly thank you art: Posted together with last month’s patrons and ko-fi donators.
- ($100) Two bonus art every month (includes thank you art)
- ($300) Three bonus art every month (includes thank you art)
- ($500) Four bonus art every month (includes thank you art)

Halloween 2018
Oh my, it’s that time of the year again… again! Anyone can make suggestions for this year’s Halloween Wallpaper (download all free wallpapers here), where Cat Nine characters will dress up as characters from another series. As usual, the wallpaper will be available to everyone for free. You can make suggestions by commenting below, in social media, or Discord! The schedule:
- Theme suggestions fromĀ September 3 to 13. For example, My Hero Academia.
- Theme poll from September 13 to 20. Time to vote for the theme!
- Character suggestions fromĀ September 20 to 27. Let’s say League of Legends was chosen. Suggest which Cat Nine character dresses up as someone from LoL, like say, Myan as Gnar or Tammy as Warwick. Specify too if they have alternate costumes!
- Character poll fromĀ September 27 toĀ October 4.
- Make the wallpaper sometime in October. Or perhaps put it up on Halloween?
Current suggestions
- BlueDavrial: Overwatch and SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy (might genderbend the boys for here)
- Golb89: Fire Emblem 7
- Eric Palmer: Avengers
- Ninjahamster5: “thriller theme? Like movie killers, or monsters?”
- Skye and ZeroKelvinKeyboard: Hyperdimension Neptunia (genderbend here too)
- LordCastigator: Gundam SEED
- Lazylonewolf: Darkest Dungeon
- ColdFusion: Adventure Time
Magical GirlĀ and bonus comics on hiatus
Again, I know.Ā I’ll definitely come back for you Magicat Girl, perhaps after Cat Nine or another project of mine is finished!
I want to concentrate all my comicking efforts on Cat Nine itself, so all bonus comics are also on hiatus… until an Episode ends maybe. I have lots of bonus comic ideas, usually related to the current Episode, but I’ve decided to copy how most manga handle omake (extra) stuff, reserving them at the end of a volume or between chapters.
Commissions now open!
I’m interested in making commissions again, though I’ll only be able to work like 1-2 of them per month though, and I’ll only start working on them after I’m done with all the comic pages for the month. You can also “commission” through Patreon too, which I prefer since you’ll also get the benefits from the other tiers. Here’s my Commissions page!
Patreon-related
- Charge up front is now available to all Patreon creators, if enabled. I think it’d be good for me too since it prevents people from pledge dodging (pledging, downloading/viewing exclusive stuff, and then cancelling their pledges before the month is over). Thankfully, none of my patrons have done that so far (thank you!), so I might only enable it in the event that someone actually does it.
- I want to make monthly fan art and Cat Nine-related vote art, andĀ RAWRs/$5 patrons can make suggestions! I’ll choose your suggestion depending on how good the idea is and if you’ve already had a suggestion drawn in the past, so other people can get a turn. And feel free to ask if they should be sexy or whatever too! If no one makes a suggestion or ask me to draw whatever, then I’ll just come up with something on my own.
- If I have time, I might start drawing concept sketches of my other planned projects, like Magicat Girl and another project that I haven’t got a name for yet. Will be accessible to Reader’s Choice/$3 patrons!
- Future WIP pics (sketch>lineart>flats) will all be in one post now since I just remembered that you can post images in the text section of Patreon posts. Makes for less posts, and you’ll still get notified in Patreon if I made any changes to a post.
- Goal changes:
- $100, I’ve decided to drop blogging since yeah, I keep missing on doing them since I really don’t want to write them. Changed it to monthly art now, and more people would probably want that anyway.
- $300 for another monthly piece of artwork. Also hey, I can officially call myself a professional when I’m earning this much, yey!
- $500 to remove all advertisements for everyone. Maybe another monthly artwork again.
- $1000 for a Magicat Girl game is a little optimistic I guess (understatement!). Removed! Heck if I know what to put as a goal here… haha maybe actually make porn.
Tasty cheesecake (also Patreon-related)
- As some of you have noticed, I’ve made uncensored versions of some stuff (two so far), you know, to test the waters on this lewd artist stuff. And boy, it was a pleasant surprise to get some new patrons (thanks again!). The most I’ll do are sexy pin-ups and their nude versions though, and not outright porn… at the moment! Oh, you can also commission said cheesecake.
- I won’t be posting the nude versions or any lewds for that matter in the Cat Nine website of course, since they’re only for patrons can see them. But…
- Lewd stuff aren’t allowed in Patreon… until I flag my page for Adult Content. I don’t want to
grow upbe Adult yet since I might miss out on people coming across my Patreon page since Adult pages are hidden from search results. So for now, I’ve posted all current and future NSFW stuff in the new #nsfw-patrons channel (for $3 patrons and above only… for now). It probably still breaks the rules, but I’ll only consider flagging my Patreon page for Adult Content if Patreon makes a complaint about it. In short, you have to go to the #nsfw-patrons to see lewds, sorry! - Finally, sorry to say this Reader’s Choice patrons that pledged for lewds, but I’ll be raising access to all lewds to RAWR/$5… in November. Most those new (fan) art might get nude versions, and they’re additional work you see. If that puts you off, just a reminder that you’re still getting a lot of Cat Nine-related benefits. If you’re still planning to cancel, well, thanks for being my patron, I’ll always be grateful for your past pledges!
I’ve recently installed the Patreon WordPress plugin, and now it should allow your Patreon account to login to Cat Nine. A log-in button is now present in the patrons page, in the left sidebar!
Your Cat Nine account will be linked to Patreon
If you already have a username in Cat Nine and try to log-in using Patreon, you might be asked to log-in to your Cat Nine’s account first, and then Patreon. This will link your account to each other.
Anyone with a Patreon account can login
Yes, it allows even non-patrons with Patreon accounts to log-in, but it’s really only useful for NomAds at the moment, although I’m planning to remove some of the ads for lower-tier patrons too.
Less or no ads for RAWR and below?
That was my original plan actually, with higher-tiers removing more ads, but I couldn’t do it since there weren’t any plugins available yet until now. I settled with the NomAd tier since creating and sending log-in details for each and every patron, then assigning them a Role in Cat Nine is too much work for me. Especially with lower-tier patrons since anyone would expect them to be more of them compared to higher-tier ones.
I still have to manually change Roles in Cat Nine to make ads not load for you though, but that’s way easier to do en masse.
EDIT: I’ve implemented lesser ads now for Starter Pack, Reader’s Choice, and RAWRs now!
- Starter PackĀ won’t see the ads inside and between blog posts.
- Reader’s ChoiceĀ won’t see the ads that Starter Pack can’t see, in addition to the left sidebar and comment section ads.
- RAWRsĀ will only see the top-most ad that’s present in the whole site.
All tiers will also hide the Comic Rocket banners on the left sidebar, near the bottom. And reminder that hiding ads will still work if you’re logged-in while using mobile devices!
No more NomAd?
I might have to remove the NomAd tier if I decide to remove all ads for RAWRs, or I can think up of another worthy reward for it as a replacement, hmm… perhaps a one-time drawing for an avatar? Suggestions welcome! I’ll return NomAd if somehow in the future the Patreon plugin doesn’t work.
EDIT: With the above changes implemented, looks like NomAd is here to stay for now, though paying an extra $2 dollars to hide the top ad… I don’t know how much that’s worth it to you guys, aside from having more priority for suggestions and art streams that is.
